The Hungarian airline Wizz Air planned to open a direct line between Skellefteå and the Polish city of Gdansk as early as summer 2020, but due to the corona pandemic, the start-up of the route was postponed.
Now the great news has come that the route will start on the 29th of March 2022 and be operated all year round, which provides increased accessibility for individuals and business to and from the Skellefteå region.
“We are pleased that Wizz Air is choosing Skellefteå and this is very positive news for both residents and the business community. The route provides increased accessibility and creates new opportunities for our communication with the outside world, which is important for our growth and development, says Robert Lindberg, CEO at Skellefteå Airport.
The establishment in Skellefteå is Wizz Airs only route in northern Sweden and involves two departures per week, Tuesdays and Saturdays, to and from the Polish city.
“This is another confirmation of Skellefteå’s attractiveness. In addition to new opportunities for tourist- and business travel for our region, the establishment means that Polish individuals and companies can easily travel to Skellefteå, which of course is positive, says Skellefteå Municipality’s Municipal Councillor Lorents Burman.
Cecilia Petzäll, Travel Trade Manager på Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, also welcomes the new route between Skellefteå and Gdansk.
“We are extremely pleased that Skellefteå is getting this direct flight from Europe. The fact that the route is served all year round is important for our tourism industry and it makes it easy to discover the whole of Swedish Lapland,” she says.
Gdansk is one of Poland’s largest and oldest cities and a popular tourist resort with its rich history and beautiful architecture. It offers a wide cultural life, an impressive restaurant selection, various shopping malls and several fine beaches thanks to its proximity to the Baltic Sea.
“In Gdansk there is something for everyone. And thanks to the frequent traffic to and from Skellefteå and the fact that Lech Walesas is an international airport, there are also opportunities to easily get on to other destinations,” says Robert Lindberg.
Traffic starts on Tuesday 29 March 2022.
The route operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays all year round. Airline tickets can be booked on www.wizzair.com
