Skellefteå Airport is one of Sweden's, Europe's and probably the world's first fossil-free airports.
The airport had zero fossil carbon dioxide emissions for the first time in 2020, as measured by the Airport Carbon and Emissions Reporting Tool (ACERT). The airport now has fossil-free heating, fossil-free green electricity and fossil-free fuels for its vehicle fleet – and now more news for a green transition is being presented.

Skellefteå Airport with a comprehensive solution for a fossil-free airport The strategic and operational work to become a fossil-free airport has been carried out purposefully in recent years through a transition to:

· Fossil-free heating with biofuel

Fossil-free electricity consumption through certified green electricity

Fossil-free vehicle fuels through electricity and the biofuel HVO-100

The measurement of the airport's CO2 emissions was carried out in 2020 in accordance with the Airport Carbon and Emissions Reporting Tool (ACERT) and shows a well-executed long-term overall solution. With zero carbon dioxide emissions, we see that Skellefteå Airport can serve as both a national and international role model for climate-smart airports - and a template for more actors.

Three news for green transition in 2021 Skellefteå Airport is collaborating on several projects together with, among others, Skellefteå Kraft, Skellefteå Science City, Sustainable Skellefteå, Northvolt and InnoEnergy to make the green transition of the aviation industry a reality and to demonstrate the Skellefteå region's suitability for, for example, testing, research and development in the area. The focus is on the development of electric and hydrogen aviation and increased availability of biofuel, which aims to replace fossil aviation fuel with fossil-free biofuel. In 2021, several important steps will be implemented that will make Skellefteå Airport one of the first airports with a comprehensive solution for the fossil-free air travel of the future.

· Skellefteå Airport will receive Charging Infrastructure for charging electric aircraft Sweden's most powerful electricity supply for charging electric aircraft will be installed in the spring of 2021. This electricity supply will work for both horizontal take-off electric aircraft and vertical take-off vehicles (eVTOL).

· Skellefteå Airport receives Biojet fuel In 2020, Skellefteå Airport participated in a collaboration with other Swedish airports to gain access to fossil-free aviation fuel (Biojet). This will be implemented in 2021, which means that Skellefteå Airport will be one of the first airports in the country to have access to fossil-free aviation fuel. Local purchases of Biojet also stimulate the biofuel market, which means increased opportunities for future local production while reducing the climate impact of air travel.

· Skellefteå Airport is developing hydrogen flights Skellefteå Airport is also working on the development of hydrogen flights. In 2021, the goal is to reach an agreement with industrial partners to jointly develop hydrogen flights

– The ongoing green transition is a prioritized development area for us. We are proud to be at the forefront and to be able to contribute to driving development. In order to create a better living environment for our children and grandchildren, it is necessary to combine innovation with long-term measures, and the right choice of partners is crucial. I look forward with great confidence to what our planned efforts in 2021 will result in for us as a seriously committed climate-smart airport – and for the industry as a whole, says Skellefteå Airport CEO Robert Lindberg.

– The Skellefteå region has unique conditions for developing fossil-free aviation. The access to expertise in battery technology, electricity supply and airport operations, as well as several potential flight routes that can be operated by fossil-free aircraft, makes the location optimal for leading and driving the green transition, says project manager Henrik Littorin.

FACTS ABOUT SKELLEFTEÅ AIRPORT:
Skellefteå Airport is Västerbotten's second largest airport with a strategic location between Luleå and Umeå. The airport opens up the route to Norrland and Swedish Lapland and shortens distances to both business connections and holiday resorts. Skellefteå Airport is owned by Skellefteå Municipality and offers domestic scheduled flights with daily departures to Arlanda, regular international flights to Gdansk and well-developed charter traffic.

Would you like to know more about Skellefteå Airport with strategy and solutions for a fossil-free airport?

Contact:
Henrik Littorin project manager Tel: 073-433 19 98
Robert Lindberg, CEO Tel: 070-551 70 75 E-mail: robert.lindberg@sft.se

Pressmeddelande 12 mars 2021: Skellefteå Airport är en av Sveriges, Europas och världens första fossilfria flygplatser Skellefteå Airport är en av Sveriges, Europas och troligen världens första fossilfria flygplatser.
