Passport, national ID card & visa

When you travel, you must always be able to identify yourself. When flying domestically, a driver's license or ID card is sufficient. If you are traveling abroad, you must make sure that you have the correct travel documents required for entry into the country you are traveling to.

If you are a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a passport or national ID card from the Police. Read more on the Police website.

Some countries require that your passport be valid for a certain period of time after entry. You should find out what applies in the country you are going to. Contact the embassy or consulate of the country in question.

Validity period for passport when traveling to Turkey

As of January 1, 2015, the passport must be valid for at least 150 days (five months) upon entry into Turkey.

Passport or national ID card required when traveling to France

As of November 16, 2015, all travelers to France will need to prove their identity with a passport or national ID card prior to departure. Travelers are therefore advised to bring their passport and/or national ID card with them.

Visa

To travel to certain countries, a visa is required. Contact the country's embassy/consulate for more information about visas and how to apply.

Luggage

Weight and dimension
Weight, dimensions, excess weight, carry-on baggage and baggage fees vary depending on the airline, destination and ticket category. Therefore, we always refer your questions about baggage to your airline or tour operator.

Lost, delayed or damaged baggage
Report lost, delayed or damaged baggage to the airline representative at the information desk in the departure hall.

If your bag is delayed, we will do our best to get it to you as soon as possible. Under normal circumstances, 95% of all delayed baggage is found within 24 hours. Start by filing a report directly at the airport at our information desk or make your own report online.

When you submit a report, you will receive a reference number/PIR receipt (e.g. SFTSK12345) shortly via email which you can use to track the status of your bag online. We will also keep you informed via email about the status of your bag and contact you once we have located it to arrange for possible delivery.

You can track your luggage online via these links:
SAS baggage search tool

Log in with your reference number (five letters and five numbers, for example SFTSK12345). Please note that this is not the same number printed on your baggage claim receipt. Please ensure that your name, address, flight details and bag details are correct. In case of any changes, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can update your report accordingly. You can make some changes/additions yourself online. This information will help us to return your baggage quickly.

For further inquiries, please email us first at info@sft.se and we will contact you as soon as possible. Write "Lost baggage" in the subject line.

Check-in

You can check in via your mobile or computer, at a check-in machine or at a check-in desk.

Keep in mind that when you check in via mobile or computer and also want to check in luggage, you need to print luggage tags at a check-in machine or ask the staff for help.

Airlines have different recommendations for when you need to check in. Therefore, contact your airline or tour operator about what applies to your trip, or call/email us and we can answer this. Also remember that you must be prepared to show identification, so bring an ID card or passport, depending on where you are traveling.

Security check

Before you are allowed to board the aircraft, you must pass through a security check, this applies to all passengers and is a requirement from the Swedish Transport Agency. The security check is to find items that are prohibited from being taken into so-called restricted areas at the airport and on board the aircraft. A restricted area is the area where passengers are after the security check and until they board the aircraft.

Tips for security checks

Have your boarding pass ready to show when you arrive at security. You do not need to show your passport here.

  • At the security checkpoint, you must show your plastic bag with liquids, which will be X-rayed.
  • You should also show any liquid medications, baby food and diet food.
  • You will need to remove your outer clothing, which will be X-rayed.
  • Take full-size laptops and other similar-sized electronic equipment out of your bags. Everything will be x-rayed.
  • Do not carry mobile phones, keys, coins and other small metal objects on you, but put them in your hand luggage before you go through security. This way, they will not be noticeable when you pass through the security gate and the check will go more smoothly for all travelers.
  • Place your hand luggage on the X-ray machine belt and pass through the metal detector yourself.
  • If you try to bring something classified as a prohibited item or too much liquid through security, it will be taken away from you.

More detailed information about airport security and lists of what is not allowed on board can be found at The Swedish Transport Agency's website.

Traveling with children

Nursing room

You will find babysitting rooms in the arrivals hall and at the gate.

Children travelling alone

Generally, children must be at least five years old to travel on their own. For children between the ages of five and eleven, most airlines offer assistance services. The requirement is that two named people drop off and pick up the child at the airports. Some airlines also offer assistance for older children.

Assistance service means that the child is taken care of before the flight and accompanied to the aircraft. Upon arrival, staff will be on site to meet the child at the gate and hand the child over to the person specified at the time of booking. The person must be able to provide identification.

Children travelling alone will receive special attention and assistance in the event of any delays or other disruptions. It is important to book your trip well in advance of departure, as the number of unaccompanied children per flight is limited. Also, make sure to check in well in advance.

The person leaving the child will be asked to assist with check-in formalities and to remain at the airport until the aircraft has taken off. Please note that children must have their own EU card to be entitled to medically necessary healthcare benefits when travelling within the EU/EEA (except when travelling within the Nordic countries).

Traveling with animals

Are you planning to travel with animals? Most airlines allow smaller animals in the cabin, while larger animals can travel as checked baggage. Normally, the cage may not exceed the dimensions and weights that apply to hand luggage. Airlines usually charge an additional fee for the animal, but not for guide dogs. It is important to mention the animal when booking, as the number of animals on board is limited. Contact the respective airline for information, rules and booking your trip.

Disability assistance

If you have a disability or reduced mobility, you should have the same opportunity to travel as everyone else. It is recommended that you plan your trip and inform your airline well in advance of your wishes and needs. There are limits on how many people with assistance needs can be brought on a flight.
If you have reduced mobility that requires special requirements during your flight, you must state this when booking your flight ticket.

The airlines will forward the information to the airport, which is responsible for escorting you when you are at the airport. Remember to be clear about your needs during your trip. Without knowledge, the staff cannot provide the best possible service.

Right to be accompanied at the airport

According to EU rules, people with reduced mobility have the right to be accompanied if the booking is made at least 48 hours before the stated departure time. If the booking is not made on time, you will still receive assistance at the airport, but the staff may not be able to provide the exact service requested.

Book a guide if you:

  • Need special service to get to and from the aircraft and to board
  • Uses portable oxygen equipment
  • Are wheelchair-bound and use a wheelchair or an electric/battery-powered wheelchair
  • Have impaired vision or hearing and need direct information
  • Bring a guide dog

Pick up point/meeting point – where you will meet the escort

A pick-up point/meeting point is a location outside or inside the airport building where travelers with reduced mobility can report their arrival at the airport and request assistance. You will be assisted from the pick-up point or check-in to the gate and board the aircraft to your seat. You can receive assistance either from a pick-up point on the airport grounds or at check-in.

Pre-ordered escort

To be accompanied, you must report to a pick-up point/check-in no later than two hours before the stated departure time. In special cases, a time for reporting may be determined in advance by the airline/tour operator in consultation with the airport. At Skellefteå Airport, one hour before departure is sufficient.

Airports and airlines work together to ensure that everyone with reduced mobility receives the best possible service.

Guide dog

Please indicate when booking that you are travelling with a guide dog. Contact the airline well in advance of your departure as the rules for travelling with a guide dog may differ between countries.

Guide dogs are usually allowed to travel with their handler in the cabin. The dog is not included in the weight limit for regular baggage and does not need to be in a cage when traveling in the cabin. Guide dogs do not cost extra.

Check the regulations in the country you are traveling to.
As an owner, you must check the rules for bringing your dog into the country you are traveling to. It is particularly important to check what vaccinations the dog must have and what quarantine rules apply.

Airport terminals are often large and difficult to navigate. Visually impaired travelers, like other people with reduced mobility, receive assistance from airport attendants to get from the check-in counter to the aircraft.

The attendant will help you find the right seat in the aircraft.

Wheelchair

Your own wheelchair may not be brought onto the plane.

When booking your trip, please state that you use a wheelchair. It is not possible for wheelchair-bound passengers to bring their own wheelchair into the cabin. The wheelchair is always transported in the aircraft's cargo hold. It is transported free of charge and does not count towards the baggage allowance.

Medicine on the go

However, medicine, baby food and diet food are exempt. You may bring as much prescription medicine as you need during your stay in your hand luggage.

You are primarily allowed to bring as much over-the-counter medicine (contact lens solution, cough medicine, nose drops, etc.) as you need during the flight itself. However, you can bring over-the-counter medicine with you for the duration of your stay if you are unsure whether you can buy the product at your destination or if it is only available in larger packages.

Medicines do not need to be in plastic bags, but remember to pack liquid medications so that you can easily present them at airport security.

Read more about what applies to medicine, baby food and diet food at The Swedish Transport Agency's website.

To import narcotics for personal use into EU/EEA countries, you must be able to show a certificate that proves your right to take the medicines with you. This applies regardless of whether you have the medicine in your hand luggage or checked in your luggage. Narcotic medicines include many sleeping pills, sedatives and strong painkillers. You can contact Apoteket to have a so-called Schengen certificate issued.

If you are unsure whether your medicine is classified as a narcotic in Sweden, you can contact your pharmacy or the Swedish Medical Products Agency.

However, drug classifications may differ between countries. The rules for importing these medications may also vary from country to country. Therefore, contact the country's embassy for more information.

Outside the EU and EEA

If you are travelling from Sweden to countries outside the EU/EEA, you should contact the embassy of the country you are visiting to find out about the rules for importing narcotic drugs. You should always be able to prove that the medicines you are carrying are for personal, medical use, for example by providing a medical certificate in the appropriate language.

You can also contact the airline you are traveling with to find out what applies.

Liability & compensation

At Skellefteå Airport, we use IATA's rules on "Liability and Compensation" from IATA SGHA 2018 AHM 810, Article 8.

Climate-smart travel

The aviation industry is working hard to reduce aviation emissions, which currently account for about 1 percent of Sweden's carbon dioxide emissions. The goal is fossil-free domestic aviation by 2030 and international aviation by 2045. The Swedish aviation industry, through the industry association Svenskt Flyg, has developed a roadmap for how Swedish aviation can become fossil-free. Read more at Fossil-free Sweden

As an air traveler, you can already make a big difference for the environment today.

Skellefteå Airport offers the public sector, business and private individuals the opportunity to fly with reduced climate impact from Skellefteå Airport. Skellefteå Municipality has also, as one of the first municipalities in the country, made the decision to reduce the climate impact of domestic flights from Skellefteå Airport by using fossil-free aviation fuel.

The fossil-free fuel is supplied by AirBP. The raw material is used cooking oil, but alternative aviation fuels for today's aircraft can also be produced from residues from the forestry and food industries, household waste and even carbon dioxide captured from the air.
