From 1 June, it will be possible for all travellers travelling from Skellefteå Airport to park for free. The offer applies to the current charter parking, which will thus be opened up to all travellers. The introduction of free parking is part of Skellefteå Airport's strategy to make it more attractive to fly to and from Skellefteå and thereby ultimately contribute to the region's growth.
Skellefteå Airport has grown by 75,000 passengers since 2009 and there is potential for further growth. With both SAS and Norwegian flying domestically to Stockholm-Arlanda from March 26th and around 100 charter flights from Skellefteå Airport in 2017, the airport will break new passenger records. In January alone, travel increased by 14 percent compared to January 2016.
"We have worked purposefully to increase the range of services at Skellefteå Airport and now we are seeing the results. With the introduction of free parking, the hope is to attract even more new travelers and thereby create a broad passenger base for all airlines at Skellefteå Airport," says Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.
– We continue to improve and strengthen our offering to and from Skellefteå and to make life easier for our travelers, and are pleased that there will now also be free parking in connection with the airport, says Anders Wahlström, Sales Manager SAS Sweden.
The development currently taking place at Skellefteå Airport is unprecedented in Swedish domestic aviation. Norwegian's establishment between Skellefteå and Stockholm Arlanda adds an additional 850 departures to SAS's 1,400 departures, providing new opportunities for travel to and from the region.
"Offering travelers free parking at Skellefteå Airport is incredibly generous and makes it much easier for those who are going out and traveling. With Norwegian's daily departures to Stockholm Arlanda, Västerbotten residents can easily travel onward both within and outside Europe, without having to worry about parking," says Norwegian's Head of Information Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson.
-The hope is of course that passenger volume will increase so that all operators can survive. However, we have a threat in the proposed aviation tax, but by introducing the possibility of free parking, we alleviate that effect and thereby give our airlines better chances of survival, which is crucial for the growth of the Skellefteå region, says Robert Lindberg, CEO, Skellefteå Airport.
Free parking will apply to the area that previously constituted charter parking. The parking near the terminal, where engine heaters and deductible elimination are included, as well as short-term parking, will remain subject to a fee.
