SAS is expanding capacity to and from Skellefteå Airport through more seats and larger aircraft. The initiative begins in conjunction with the start of the winter program on October 25 and will mean a significant increase in capacity for Skellefteå during the upcoming winter traffic.
Air traffic to and from Skellefteå has been developing positively for some time. Skellefteå Airport is currently close to the passenger levels recorded before the corona pandemic. Northvolt's bankruptcy led to a temporary decline in travel, but now there are signs of an increased need for flight capacity to and from Skellefteå. The background is, among other things, new and ongoing industrial establishments as well as forecasted regional growth. After an active and long-term dialogue between Skellefteå Airport and SAS, SAS has now decided to increase capacity on the route. The increase means that the number of seats offered increases significantly compared to the previous winter, at the same time as several smaller turboprop aircraft are being replaced with larger Airbus 320 aircraft and Embraer 195.
- We see an increased interest in travel to and from Skellefteå and are pleased to be able to strengthen our offering in the region. Good accessibility and strong connections are important for both people and businesses, and by increasing capacity we want to contribute to the region's continued development and accessibility, says Henrik Winell, Vice President Network SAS
- SAS's decision is very important for Skellefteå. During the past year, flights to and from Skellefteå have had a high occupancy rate, and we have therefore had an active dialogue with SAS about the need for increased capacity. I am very pleased with today's announcement, which means more airline seats and better accessibility for the entire Skellefteå region, says Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.
Starting with the winter program 2026/2027, SAS will also deploy the Embraer 195 aircraft on certain flights to and from Skellefteå. The winter schedule starts on 25/10.
