As the first airport in the world, Skellefteå Airport has now installed several sanitization systems to increase safety, reduce the spread of infection and ensure the safety of travelers. "This is an investment in sustainable travel now during the ongoing pandemic, but just as much for the future. It is not only during times of crisis that we need to work on reducing the spread of infection, so having the solution in place now feels fantastic," says Robert Lindgren, CEO and airport manager.
Sanitization modules have been installed at security checkpoints, where all travelers pass through. Normally, many people touch the plastic boxes and this can be a major source of infection, but with the new solution, all boxes are sanitized after each use. The sanitization systems are installed in several places where many people are present, and new products have also been developed specifically to suit airports.
– It is based on safe and well-tested technology where we use UV light to sanitize contact surfaces and air without chemicals, says Erik Wikström, co-founder of Whitebox, the company that supplies the sanitization systems.
At Norrland University Hospital in Umeå, the technology that Whitebox uses in its products has been tested to ensure the safety of the products.
-The technology has been tested on Covid-19 and the underlying virus of the SARS COV-2 pandemic. The results are confirmed in a laboratory environment and show that the technology used by Whitebox products kills these viruses with 100% certainty, says Joakim Wincent, co-founder of Whitebox.
For Skellefteå Airport, it is important to constantly work to secure travel in every way they can. Being able to do this together with a local player like Whitebox feels extra good, says Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.
– Being able to participate in developing products with an innovative technology company like Whitebox to solve one of our greatest societal challenges of all time feels extra good, says Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport. The fact that we are also the first airport in the world is also fun, we are happy to assist with knowledge and experience in the subject and are happy to advise other airports on how it can further secure travel, he says.
The sanitization modules are flexible solutions designed to fit into the airport environment and public areas. At baggage claim, a module has been installed that sanitizes suitcases before they reach the baggage carousel.
– Independent tests show that UV light is not harmful to luggage, so you don't need to worry about anything being damaged by the treatment, says Joakim Wincent, co-founder of Whitebox.
What is the interest from other airports?
– Many airports have shown interest in these products, and we are happy to help with our experience! Says Robert Lindberg, CEO of Skellefteå Airport.
