The Hungarian airline Wizz Air planned to open a direct route between Skellefteå and the Polish city of Gdansk as early as the summer of 2020, but due to the corona pandemic, the start of the flight was postponed.
Now the good news has come that the flight will start on March 29, 2022 and will operate year-round, providing increased accessibility for private individuals and businesses.
– We are pleased that Wizz Air has chosen Skellefteå and this is very positive news for both residents and the business community. The route provides increased accessibility and creates new opportunities for our communication with the outside world, which is important for our growth and development, says Skellefteå Airport CEO Robert Lindberg.
The establishment in Skellefteå is Wizz Air's only flight route in northern Sweden and involves two departures per week, Tuesdays and Saturdays, to and from the Polish city.
– This is further proof of the attractiveness of Skellefteå. In addition to new opportunities for tourist and business travel for our region, the establishment means that Polish individuals and companies can easily get to Skellefteå, says Skellefteå Municipality's municipal councilor Lorents Burman.
Cecilia Petzäll, Travel Trade Manager at the Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, also has a positive view of the new line between Skellefteå and Gdansk. – Yes, we obviously think it is gratifying that Skellefteå is getting a new direct line from Europe. The fact that it is also operated year-round is very good for the tourism industry.
From Skellefteå Airport, travelers can easily travel to all of Swedish Lapland, so the airport's development is good for our entire Arctic destination, she says.
Gdansk is one of Poland's largest and oldest cities and a popular tourist destination with its rich history and beautiful architecture. It offers a wide cultural life, an impressive selection of restaurants, various shopping centers and several nice beaches thanks to its proximity to the Baltic Sea.
– There is something for everyone in Gdansk. And thanks to the frequent traffic to and from Skellefteå and the fact that Lech Walesa is an international airport, there are also opportunities to easily travel on to other destinations, says Robert Lindberg.
Traffic starts on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.
The flight operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays all year round. Flight tickets can be booked at www.wizzair.com
