Wizz Air opens flight between Skellefteå and Gdansk

The Hungarian airline Wizz Air is establishing a direct route between Skellefteå and the Polish city of Gdansk starting in spring 2021. The route will operate year-round.

– We are pleased that Wizz Air chooses Skellefteå and Swedish Lapland, this is very positive news for both residents and the business community. The line provides increased accessibility and creates new opportunities for our communication with the outside world, which is important for our region's development. Even though we are currently in the middle of a pandemic, we hope that people will be able to travel safely later this year, says Skellefteå Airport CEO Robert Lindberg.

The establishment in Skellefteå is Wizz Air's only flight route in northern Sweden.

– This is further proof of the attractiveness of Skellefteå. In addition to new opportunities for tourist and business travel for our region, the establishment means that Polish individuals and companies can easily get to Skellefteå, says Skellefteå Municipality's municipal councilor Lorents Burman.

Frida Ekeström, destination development strategist at the Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, also views the new line between Skellefteå and Gdansk positively.

– We find it extremely gratifying that Skellefteå is getting a new regular direct flight from Europe, it is a statement of strength that they are choosing to invest in this flight route in the current situation. The fact that it operates year-round is important for the tourism industry. From Skellefteå Airport, it is easy to get to all of Swedish Lapland, so the airport is very important to us, she says.

– Direct flight connections and accessibility are a business-critical factor for our tourism industry and the timing could not be better. We are therefore delighted about the new route and hope and believe that this investment will lead to more establishments in the long term, says Bo Wikström, at Visit Skellefteå

Gdansk is one of Poland's largest and oldest cities and a popular tourist destination with its rich history and beautiful architecture. It offers a wide cultural life, an impressive selection of restaurants, various shopping centers and several nice beaches thanks to its proximity to the Baltic Sea.

– There is something for everyone in Gdansk. And thanks to the frequent traffic to and from Skellefteå and the fact that Lech Walesa is an international airport, there are also opportunities to easily travel on to other destinations, says Robert Lindberg.

Flight tickets can be booked at www.wizzair.com starting January 14. Wizz Air planned to open a direct route between Skellefteå and the Polish city of Gdansk in the summer of 2020, but due to the Corona pandemic, the start of the flight was postponed.
